The Glashütte Original SeaQ Chronograph Review
The Glashütte SeaQ collection managed to immediately attract people’s attention. Although these looks are not exceptionally unique, you don’t find them as often anymore. There is a special appeal to the combination of the 39.55 case with the oversized numeral dial. This whole collection took inspiration from the Spezimatic dive watch. Since this style is not often seen today, it makes it extremely eye-catching. Add the high quality movements and you will get an elite quality product.
SeaQ Chronograph Overview
Another model added to the SeaQ collection is the SeaQ Panorama Date which displays a similar style with a 43.2 mm case and a bigger date window at the 4 o’clock position. This was the timepiece which served as a foundation for the creation of the SeaQ Chronograph. It was the base upon which the Glashütte Original was integrated in a chronograph. In turn, the design also underwent some changes.
SeaQ Chronograph provides a 300m water resistance level for the case. It is a fairly large wristwatch which goes well with larger wrists. When it comes to chronographs, a bigger size is understandable. The SeaQ Chronograph is almost 17mm thick, which is partially due to the box-shaped sapphire crystal lens.
The functionality of the SeaQ Chronograph
Glashütte Original was aiming to create a unique diver’s chronograph that would not compromise the 300m water resistance. They tried to combine a flyback chronograph with great water resistance and anti-magnetic properties. In doing so, they came up with a thicker profile. Similarly to the other timepieces in the SeaQ collection, this chronograph performs according to the ISO 6425 diver’s standard.
With this in mind you can better understand why this timepiece is designed in such a way. It still provides great comfort and it is extremely light on the wrist. The case is round and it has curved lugs in order to make sure that the watch is very comfy on the wrist. After trying it on myself I can confidently say that it is way more comfortable than the dimensions would suggest.
A truly refined look
Another distinct feature which characterizes all Glashütte Original watches is the refined design and finish. They incorporate fine details and an overall brushed finish. Combined with beveled edges, the finished look is a sight for sore eyes. Similar to the previous models from the SeaQ collection, this timepiece has a brushed finish which comes in a circular pattern. This puts more emphasis on the round shape of the case, while the beveled edges accentuate the angles.
On the right side of the case, there is a screw down crown which is carefully polished. Protected by a few crown guards, there are octagonal pushers which also feature a polished finish. This creates a stark contrast with the case. The dark blue dial is complemented by the ceramic bezel which has a 60-minute diving scale. This shows that the SeaQ Chronograph is not just another chrono timepiece.
How does the SeaQ Chronograph design differ from other models?
What shows the most distinctive changes made for the SeaQ Chronograph is the dial. The chronograph elements are what bring a fresh look to this timepiece. Staying true to the SeaQ aesthetic, there are applied Arabic numerals on the 6th and 12th position. In order to make space for the registers of the chronograph, the other numerals were replaced with baton hour markers. Now, you can better understand the role of the 2th, 8th and 10th numerals in creating that distinct Panorama Date look.
Glashütte Original implemented two large registers at the 3rd and 9th position for the SeaQ Chronograph. In turn, the date window had to be placed just above the 6 o’clock position, as opposed to the 4th one. As a counterweight, the second hand of the central chronograph features the double G logo. When this hand is at the 12 o’clock position, there are many elements placed along the vertical axis of the dial. Considering the 12 o’clock numerals, the name of the brand, the double G logo and the oversized date display, there is a lot to take in.
A strikingly beautiful dial
The dial of the SeaQ Chronograph is strikingly beautiful. There is a special level of mastery involved in the making of such a distinct dial. Featuring a domed handcrafted blue dial, SeaQ Chronograph stands out from the rest. The finishing features a gorgeous sunray pattern. The sapphire crystal lens is box-shaped, which can distort the minutes and seconds track at the periphery of the dial. If you were to look at the face from an angle, you would clearly notice this.
The chronograph counters are a bit darker than the blue used for the dial. These registers are recessed and decorated with sailing as well. As I previously mentioned, the date display is placed just above the 6 o’clock numeral. The Panorama Date discs with their white numerals complement the blue of the dial. The SeaQ hands are straightforward and a bit oversized. As such, they are very easy to read. They are filled with Super-LumiNova which ensures legibility in environments with less light.
SeaQ Chronograph Movement: Caliber 37-23
For this timepiece, the caliber 37-23 is used. Made in-house, this automatic caliber integrates a column wheel flyback chronograph. Made from the caliber 37, this was introduced in 2014. The brand removed the 12-hour counter from the SeaQ chronograph. Glashütte Original also incorporated a silicon balance spring with this movement. Ultimately, it operates 28,800vph and it provides 70 hours of power reserve.
There is a skeletonized rotor featured in this movement, which shows the brand’s distinct double G symbol. Equipped with a heavy rim made of 21K yellow gold, this timepiece features a three-quarter plate with distinct Glashütte stripes. Simply looking at this movement is a beautiful art show. In regards to its functionality, Glashütte Original made sure to make the crown very user-friendly. When the crown is in its first position and unscrewed, you can wind the movement by hand. If you pull it to the second position you can adjust the date. If you pull it back to the third position you can set the time while stopping the smaller seconds hand. Since you can adjust the date while using the crown, there is no date corrector on the side of the case.
SeaQ Chronograph: Comfort on the wrist
When you wear it, the SeaQ Chronograph displays an amazing wrist presence. Partially due to the size and partially due to the vibrant blue color, the striking details will surely grab your attention at any time of the day. Even though the design may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it makes sense and it is actually the most reasonable compilation possible.
The build quality of this movement showcases great craftsmanship. The pushers are very easy to operate and a simple click confirms each step of their use. The strap was a 21mm blue synthetic band which was paired with a stainless steel folding buckle. Both elements fit the overall aesthetic perfectly. There is also a gray version of the band, or another black rubber steel strap. For those who prefer bracelets, there is a stainless steel bracelet option available as well. In opinion, the blue strap is not only gorgeous, but also very comfortable, so I recommend you try it out.
Final remarks
The Glashütte Original SeaQ Chronograph is a charming timepiece. I must say it took a few days until I got used to the design and the dimensions. However, once you understand where the brand is coming from, everything comes together. The technicality and its great precision add to its worth. Moreover, the fascinating detail work is something you rarely find in other chronograph watches.
If you are a fan of the SeaQ Panorama Date but you are also looking for the functionality of a flyback chrono timepiece, the SeaQ Chronograph is the right watch for you. The version which features the synthetic strap with a pin buckle is available for €14,100. For another extra €300 you can get the version which features a folding clasp. In my personal opinion, the regular SeaQ model is the best of the whole collection. It has a distinct character, a friendly sixe and it is a highly functional diving watch. Nevertheless, this chronograph may lack the elegance of the smaller model, however, it still delivers an impressive aesthetic. For dive watch aficionados, this timepiece will surely be a true gem.
